Through my experience on several school publications, including Silver Chips Print, SilverQuest Magnet Literary Magazine, and DMV Health Initiative, I have learned to use language to stand up for what I believe in and give a voice to the voiceless.
While co-writing my award-winning feature article "Waiting for the green light," I had the opportunity to connect with Blair families who must endure the arduous process of applying for American citizenship. As Blair has a significant immigrant population, this is an issue that many students must deal with. I hoped to shed light on this process to promote increased understanding and empathy. While interviewing sources for my article "Translating the adult world," I learned the stories of Blair students who must balance adolescence with significant adult-like responsibilities as they help translate for their non-English-speaking parents. This experience opened my eyes to the difficulties that many of my peers quietly endure on a daily basis. I made sure to include a diverse array of sources, interviewing students from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. The experience of writing the article "More than just a pretty face" changed my view on beauty pageants. While interviewing my sources--girls who have participated in pageants--I was met with strong feminists who hoped to use their pageant platform to advance women. Through my feature, I hoped to show a new side of pageant participants, who are often villanized and portrayed in a negative light.
