Photojournalism
From a young age, I have found myself fascinated with the art of photography. With just a single press of the shutter button, I could immortalize a single moment in time.
I have found photographs to be a perfect accompaniment to journalistic writing. Not only do they draw in the attention of readers, but photographs also have the ability to tell a story of their own. As a member of the Silver Chips writing staff, I communicate with our incredible photography staff to capture some of the most important moments in the stories we cover.

Although I am officially a member of the Silver Chips writing staff, I am not afraid to get behind the camera while out in the field. For my news story "Community discussions question de facto segregation," I took photographs of the group discussions at community meetings to capture how engaged community members were in this issue.

Being a journalist requires selecting photographs that enhance your stories, as well as writing concise captions to accompany those photos. This striking image was used for my Op/Ed "Setting the movement backward." In the article, my co-writer and I discuss the self-sabatoging effects of uniformed protest. Our article was inspired by recent protests, in which some activists conflated the March For Our Lives movement with the Black Lives Matter movement. Thus, I decided to accompany the article with a photograph depicting March for Our Lives protestors using a well-known Black Lives Matter chant. The beginning of my caption, "Hands Up, Don't Shoot," incorporates an auditory element for my story. |
Some of my favorite captions to write are those that accompany sports photographs. As a competitive swimmer of 13 years, I am fascinated by the heat-of-the-moment photographs that come out of sports events. I strive to write captions equally as dynamic as the photographs they describe by incorporating puns that serve as a nod at each individual sport. |
Bethesda Barracudas
I have been a competitive swimmer for over 13 years. Over the years, I have garnered regional and national recognition, from a Maryland HS Championship state record in the 200 medley relay to an All-American Consideration.
Yet, I never forget where my love for swimming began—with my local summer swim team, the Bethesda Barracudas.
Although we are one of the biggest swim teams in the county, we are an extremely close-knit team. Four years ago, our professional team photographer retired. Not wanting the new generation of Barracudas to be without a means of preserving their childhood summer memories, I decided to step up as the new team photographer, despite a lack of prior photography experience. Armed with my dad's old Canon DSLR, I capture some of the most dynamic and special moments of growing up at the pool each summer: blue-lipped teeth-chattering before a five-year-old's first race, unexpected bursts of determination during a swim, laughter between friends over snack-shop ice cream. I have edited and uploaded over 1,500 photographs to our team's Shutterfly website for families to download and cherish. The photographs above are samples of some of my photography work.
The experience of taking photographs for my summer swim team has taught me skills that I hope to apply to photojournalism as I pursue journalism in college and beyond.
